Slicers and timelines
A field's items as buttons beside the pivot, and a date's periods as a strip.
A slicer
Add a slicer (in a field's ⋯ menu in the field list) puts the field's items beside the pivot as buttons.
- A click keeps one item; Ctrl or ⌘ with a click adds or takes one; Shift with a click takes the run from the item clicked last; the arrow keys walk the buttons.
- Clear keeps every item again.
- Its ⋯ has the Buttons in a line, Hide items with no data, Caption… and Remove the slicer.
- An item no record of the pivot stands under once its other filters are applied is muted and last, or hidden.
A timeline
Add a timeline (on a date field) puts its periods beside the pivot as a strip — Years, Quarters, Months or Days. A click keeps a period; Shift with a click, or a drag, keeps a run; the arrow keys walk the strip and, with Shift, stretch the run.
What they filter
A slicer and a timeline hold no filter of their own: what they choose is the field's own filter where it stands — a field that is not on the pivot is put in Filters to hold it — named above the grid like any other, and changed from either place. Taken away, what they chose still holds.
