Conditional formats

Mark a value's cells by where each number stands among the others: bars, colours, icons or a rule.

The marks

Conditional format… (in a value's menu) marks its cells by where each number stands among the others:

  • Data bars — a bar as long as the number is large;
  • a Colour scale — a colour between that of the smallest and that of the largest;
  • Icons — an arrow, a light or a sign for the upper, middle and lower third;
  • or A rule — a fill where the number is Greater than, Less than or Between numbers you give, among The largest or The smallest so many, or Above the average or Below the average.

What is compared

Down the rows and Across say which cells are compared with one another: The items, the totals of a level, or the grand total — a total is compared with totals of its own level, never with the lines under it.

  • The form says what will be marked before you Add it; the dialog lists the pivot's formats, each with Take off.
  • A marked cell says what its mark means when you point at it.
  • What is compared is what the cell shows — a share, where the value is shown as one. Nothing is read again.
