Import a sheet and explore it before it becomes records

Upload a CSV file or an Excel workbook (.xlsx), explore it in Explorer as it arrived — its columns typed, filtered and grouped — then map it into an entity and write its rows as records.

For: Member, Tenant administrator

Prerequisite

record.read in the tenant to explore staged sheets; record.write to stage, map and write one. An entity to write the rows into: the tenant's own, or one its account or the platform shares with it. The records are always the tenant's.

Stage the sheet

  1. In a tenant, open Explorer, choose Imported sheets in the bar and press Import a sheet: the import opens beside the records.
  2. Drop a CSV file or an Excel workbook (.xlsx) with a header row, or click to choose one. A workbook with several sheets asks which one: choose it under Sheet to stage and press Stage the chosen sheet.
  3. Choose the entity its rows will become and press Stage the sheet. Nothing is a record yet.

Explore it

  1. Open Explore this sheet in Explorer. The sheet is a column, named after the file; its columns are typed by their values (numbers, dates, true/false, text).
  2. Use Filter by, Sort by and Group by to look for gaps and odd values before you import.
  3. Row is each row's line in the sheet; Import status says whether it was parsed, checked, written or failed.

Map it and write the rows

  1. Press Map into an entity at the foot of the sheet's column.
  2. For each column, choose the field it becomes, or Skip. A column named like a field starts mapped to it.
  3. Press Map and check every row. Each value is checked against its field's rules; what the checks found is listed.
  4. Press Write the rows as records. Each row that passed becomes a new record; rows with an error are left out.

Good to know

  • A sheet takes at most 5,000 rows and 500 columns, with named, distinct column headers; an upload is at most 3.5 MB.
  • From a workbook: dates arrive as ISO dates (2026-09-26, or 2026-09-26T09:30:00 with a time), numbers as numbers, true/false as true and false, and a formula as the value the spreadsheet program saved with it. A line break inside a cell becomes a space.
  • A header row with merged cells, or a column with values but no header, is refused with what to fix. Hidden sheets are not offered.
  • Excel 97–2003 workbooks (.xls) and password-protected workbooks are not read: save them as .xlsx (without a password) or as CSV first.
  • A mapping cannot be changed once saved; stage the file again to map it differently.
  • The staged sheet stays in Explorer as it arrived, with the rows that became records marked committed.
  • Updating records that match a key (upsert) is not offered here yet; every row becomes a new record.
