Changing what an entity inherits from

What depends on an inheritance link, and the ways to change it without losing data.

Change inheritance

Change inheritance on a parent starts from what you mean, and first counts what depends on the link — values in fields inherited through it, links between records that rely on the entity being a kind of that parent, domain views exposing what it passes down, and inheritance decisions on its fields — across every tenant.

ChoiceWhat it does
It was linked by mistake — remove the linkOnly when all four counts are 0; otherwise the screen names them and points to the next two.
Move it to another parentEach inherited field is mapped onto a field of the new parent with the same data type, kept as the entity's own, or dropped (only if no record holds a value). A parent that would make the entity inherit from itself is refused.
Stop inheriting, keep the fieldsEvery inherited field becomes the entity's own (a colliding key gets _own, and the screen says so).
End the inheritance from today, keep historyThe link ends today and stays, listed under Inherits from as history with the day it ended. Nothing is moved or deleted: the fields inherited only through it are no longer shown on records and new records do not get them, while their values stay stored and in each record's history (marked “no longer inherited”). The screen counts the fields and values before you confirm.

When you move or stop, values move in steps of at most 500, with a progress bar: each becomes a new version in the target field naming the version it came from, and the old version is closed and kept as history. The link is swapped or removed only once no value is left. If a step stops, Resume carries on; nothing is moved twice. Ending from today moves nothing, so it is done in one step.

Keep in mind Links between records and domain views that rely on the old parent are not changed for you: to move or stop, end the links in Explorer or hide the exposure in the Workflow & EntityView Designer first. In a tenant, values another tenant holds cannot be moved; make that change at the platform. Ending from today leaves existing links between records as they are; no new one can be made through the ended parent.

Tip The help center's Change what an entity inherits from walks through it step by step.
